Reasons For An Employee Manual

Most of my clients (1) leave the items in BLACK as they are written, (2) delete the items in RED after they read the instructions and decided how the instructions apply to their organizations, and (3) select the wording in BLUE that best fits their firms’ needs. And with that, they have an Employee Manual ready for distribution to employees. The final document is usually between 25 and 30 pages after all the deletions and changes.
An important part of any Employee Manual is the Acknowledgement of Receipt page. Page 2 of this Manual is the Acknowledgment Form. This Form, which the employee signs and returns to you, provides a critical written agreement in which the employee acknowledges his/her adherence to the Employee Manual, that information contained in the manual is not all-inclusive, that the employee will abide by confidentiality guidelines, and much more. This Form becomes an important legal document that can be used as part of a defense in the event you are involved in unemployment compensation hearings, Workers Compensation cases, or employee litigation.
The Manual is also setup using a fictitious company called Bob’s Big Bear Bookbinding, Inc. (BBBB). The Manual references BBBB throughout as shown in the sample Sick Leave page above. As such, all you need to do is to initiate a Microsoft Word Find & Replace procedure that Finds “BBBB” and Replaces it with your initials and in 10 seconds all the references are change to your organization.
